Embracing the Process

“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.” —Romans 6:12-14 Continue reading

Reckoned Dead

“Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” —Romans 6:11

A man is a soul who possesses a nature. We have a nature; we possess natural traits, attributes, and characteristics that have been passed down from generation to generation, beginning with Adam and Eve. Continue reading

Experiential Sanctification: Some Defining Terms

In examining the text of Romans 6:1-11 in the past few weeks, it has allowed us to look at the NEWNESS OF LIFE that a Christian possesses through IDENTIFICATION with Christ, specifically identifying with His death, burial and resurrection as the certain reality of the miracle that made possible a believer’s REGENERATION and REPENTANCE through faith. Another way we might define this is by calling it POSITIONAL SANCTIFICATION: that moment, when justified by grace through faith, we are made new creatures in Christ. Continue reading

Alive unto God

“Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him:” —Romans 6:8

Romans 6:8 presents the reality of faith, which is a faith that is alive unto Christ; and that living faith is explained in vv9-10 (note the colon behind v8).

Reality That Makes Free

“For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.” —Romans 6:5-7

Our last two articles presented three very basic, practical truths from this Scripture portion: (1) union with Christ that rests in hope (v5); (2) knowledge of truth that moves with power (v6); and (3) the reality of the Cross that makes free (v7).

Truth That Moves with Power

“For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.” —Romans 6:5-7

Our last article mentioned there very basic practical truths from this Scripture portion: (1) union with Christ that rests in hope (v5); (2) knowledge of truth that moves with power (v6); and (3) the reality of the Cross that makes free (v7). As we only examined verse 5, let us turn our attention to verse 6. Continue reading

Union That Rests in Hope

“For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.” —Romans 6:5-7

Although these three verses are connected to many other things, I’d like us to see three basic and very practical truths for our Christian lives within this text: (1) union with Christ that rests in hope (v5); (2) knowledge of truth that moves with power (v6); and (3) the reality of the Cross that makes free (v7). In this article we will look at verse 5 particularly. Continue reading

Newness of Life

“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” —Romans 6:3, 4 Continue reading
