My Reality: Carnal, Sold under Sin

“For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.” —Romans 7:14

As mentioned in the last article, there is a shift from the use of the past tense to the present tense: “…the law is spiritual… I am carnal.” Not only do I believe that this verse is key to unlocking the truth in the verses to follow, but that the tenses used in this verse are a key to unlocking the truth in this verse.

The Struggle of the Bond Slave

As we examined the Scriptures from Romans 6 several weeks ago, the Holy Spirit illuminated to us that we, as sinners saved by grace, are no longer under bondage to sin. In the past two weeks we examined the Scripture portion from Romans 7:1-13, which taught us that we are not under bondage to the law. Can we sin freely and openly disregarding the law? No. Does forcing the observance of the law upon myself and others make me more righteous? Absolutely not.

The freedom of bondage from both sin and law presents a struggle since the sinner that is saved by grace has been changed, made alive in Christ; nevertheless, he is not yet glorified. The struggle exists, and must exist, because it moves us to embrace grace and not let go; to cling to the Cross of Calvary; to cleave to Jesus Christ and no one else; it presses us to trust in and depend upon the Master, leaning upon His everlasting arms.

Psalm 1

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” —Psalm 1:1

The Scottish Psalter was written anonymously in 1635 and published and appointed for use in worship by the Church of Scotland in 1650. Scripture paraphrases were added in 1781. The Scottish Psalter and Paraphrases was the primary hymnal used by the Church of Scotland through the 19th century. The Scottish Psalter was originally contained in one volume. When the Scripture paraphrases were added in the 18th century, its addition expanded the singular volume. Continue reading

The LORD's Perfect Law

The Restrictions of the Law (Law’s Inability)

If the Law could teach anything, the apostle Paul, being perhaps one of the most brilliant scholars of the Law in his day, may have gotten saved through the law. But no, it took the revelation of Jesus Christ on the road to Damascus to reveal life to him and create life in Him. The law, though it offered life through its obedience, was unable to give life because no sinful descendent of Adam could obey. Continue reading

If the Lord should bring him to remembrance, please continue to pray for Miles as he is ministering in Ireland. Continue reading

The Role of the Law 2: Our Schoolmaster

“Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law” (Galatians 3:21).

The law does not oppose the promises of God because a man could never attain to righteousness by his own efforts (Romans 3:23; Isaiah 64:6). Therefore, he could not stand justified before God because of the law. Continue reading

Particular Election

Forty years ago a special meeting was called at Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Lake Charles, Louisiana, because the pastor of that congregation, Donald McKinney, had embraced the doctrine of God’s sovereign grace and began preaching those Biblical truths from the pulpit.

On Tuesday morning, March 3, 1970, with the district superintendant in attendance, Brother Don McKinney used the text of 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 to preach a sermon titled, “Particular Election.” After the message was preached, it was put to the congregation that all those who had believed what Brother Mac had preached to please stand. All those who stood were asked to leave the church. Continue reading

The Role of the Law (Law’s Utility)

If we, who are in Christ, have become dead to the law, then what purpose did the law serve when we were still sinners? What role did it play? How was the law utilized in the eternal plan of Redemption? That is what the apostle addresses here.

“What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet” (Romans 7:7). Continue reading
