Practical Evangelism

First, some would look at those of us whose theology is Reformed and whose bibliology is Calvinistic as not being evangelistic. History will put that to rest as God ministered through Calvinistic preachers during America’s First and Second Great Awakenings: in the First by such men as Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) and George Whitefield (1714-1770); and in the Second by such men as Asahel Nettleton (1783-1844) and Timothy Dwight (1752-1817). Additionally, modern missions movement was pioneered by Calvinistic Baptists, Andrew Fuller (1754-1815) and William Carey (1761-1834).

Second, we want to keep in mind that there are some practical elements to evangelism; and practical doesn’t mean pragmatic. As Reformed thinkers we know that the results are in God’s hands; yet, he uses means to convey the gospel: the Word of God preached through fallen descendents of Adam saved by God’s grace.

Forgetful of Christ?

Do you not find yourselves forgetful of Jesus? Some creature steals away your heart, and you are unmindful of him upon whom your affection ought to be set. Continue reading

He Ran and Worshipped Christ

“But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.” —Mark 5:6, 7

We should never allow ourselves to think that just because we have approached near the Lord to worship Him that we have served Him and honored Him. Even in the most wretched villainy of a legion of demons, in the presence of the Almighty Christ they run to worship Him because Jesus is God and He is worthy of all worship, as it is written in Philippians 2:10-11, Continue reading

Christian Behavior 17

If you are a parent, a father, or a mother, then you are to consider your calling under this relationship.

Your children have souls, and they must be born of God as well as of you, or they will perish. And know this also, that unless you are very careful in your behavior to and before them, they may perish through you as the instrument of their destruction: the thought of which should provoke you, both to instruct, and also to correct them. Blessedness in Christ

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” —Matthew 5:3

Sung in Common Meter (C.M.) to the tune of “Azmon” or “Hudson.” Familiar hymns sung to Azmon and Hudson are “O, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” and “At the Cross” respectively. Continue reading

Only by Supernatural Birth

“O Sirs, if you remain what you are by nature, you may strive to do what you please, but when you have dressed out the child of nature in its finest garments, it is still only the child of nature finely dressed, but not the child of God You must be, by a supernatural birth, allied to the living God, for, if not, all the works that you may perform will not entitle you to the possession of the inheritance of the Most High.” Continue reading

Heavenly Inheritance

“But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them.” —Joshua 13:33

Levi’s name means “joined to” or “attached.” What a blessed inheritance they received! They were joined to Jehovah. The LORD Himself was the tribe’s inheritance. Their possession was not land that could be invaded or plundered; neither was it vineyards that could be blighted; nor was it houses that could be robbed or destroyed. Continue reading

God Hardens Hearts

“For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.” —Romans 9:17, 18 Continue reading
