The Law’s Righteousness Described

We should also keep in mind that had Jesus not gone to the cross, had the incarnation not happened, Jesus Christ would not have changed one iota. He is “the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8). Not a single one of His attributes would have diminished; neither would His character be tarnished. Jesus Christ is very God, perfect, precious, and praised in all glory. Nevertheless, by His incarnation, being fully God and fully man upon the earth with two distinct natures and yet only one divine Person, it is by His vicarious death upon the cross that provides the created universe the ultimate manifestation of the excellence of His being, the perfection of His purpose, the superlative greatness of all His virtues, the majesty of eternal realities through God’s rich, free and sovereign grace, &etc. Continue reading

CHRIST, the End of the Law: Future

“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” —Romans 10:4 We have already seen how Christ is the end of the law for righteousness with respect to that which has past, meaning that Christ was the goal of the law for righteousness. We have also seen how Christ is the end of the law for righteousness with respect to the present, meaning that Christ is the fulfillment of the law in justification for salvation, and also in sanctification for growth in grace. Finally, Christ is the end of the law for righteousness with respect to the completion of the law in glorification, as well as condemnation, in that Day when Christ returns. Continue reading

CHRIST, the End of the Law: Present 1

This verse does not only have a dimension that pertains to the past, but also has an aspect that pertains to the present for the believing saint in Christ. PRESENT: When we say that Christ is the end of the law for righteousness in the present tense, we mean that Christ is the fulfillment of the law, which happens in every believing saint’s life at the moment of salvation, and also continues as an on-going process until the return of Jesus Christ. Although it does contain more than we will cover here, this present fulfillment has two distinct and important features: (1) Justification; and (2) Sanctification. Continue reading

CHRIST, the End of the Law: Past

What does the apostle mean when he says that Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to the believer? Although the implications and applications are far reaching, spanning the scriptures from Genesis to Revelation, we should consider three very important aspects of this truth: Past, Present, and Future.

PAST: When we say that Christ is the end of the law for righteousness in the past tense, we mean that the goal of the law, the law’s explicit intent and very purpose, was to lead us to Christ. This carries with it two important features: (1) Revelation; and (2) Abolition. Continue reading

Ignorant of God’s Righteousness

The unbelieving Jews were ignorant of God’s righteousness because His righteousness is revealed from faith to faith. They were too busy trying to attain righteousness by their own merit and deeds, through keeping the law. They were convinced in their own minds that their keeping the law was sufficient, and thus, the faith in Christ was a stumbling block to them. Continue reading
